Xmas Spotlight….on City Business
Xmas Spotlight….on City Business11th December 2013 -
A great event for businesses, the Xmas Spotlight, was held last week at the (arguably) biggest and best brand in the area, Stoke City FC, with a mixed bag of big and small businesses and charities attending. There existed a feeling of positivity throughout the room, with some rousing and inspiring words, especially from Julie Mirowski from Ryedale Roofing whose rallying cry to Keep Business Local was felt in agreement throughout the room.
Staffordshire stalwarts JCB and Bet365 have both recently announced expansion plans and the creation of hundreds of jobs to further boost the local economy- echoing the buzz that is bubbling under the surface in this regeneration phase that is only going to build and gain momentum in the foreseeable future.
Netbiz Group also recently attended the Factory: Assembly event, which was focused on the creative industry in the area. The Xmas Spotlight event was a mixture of business and pleasure, but also a type of celebration of the manufacturing and construction industry.
Organised by the Staffordshire Chamber of Commerce, these types of events are crucial in rebuilding the confidence of industry in Stoke-on-Trent- a city that was ‘born’ in the industrial revolution and continues to have industry running through its veins.
There are obviously more strands of business today, including services, IT, telecoms and gaming; these types of industry are a requisite just as much as the hard mechanicals of construction/manufacturing for a modern and booming city.
We do need however, to protect our background and the rich heritage of Stoke-on-Trent; the news that the ‘jewel in the crown’ of tourist attractions, Gladstone Pottery Museum, could possibly have the budget for their educational activities pulled, is a decision that is causing outrage.
It could be argued that the positivity about business in the city is one of false hope; however from attending this event and others recently, I feel like this is the start of something special…Make It Your Business, Make it Stoke-on-Trent.
